Lately, the recast issue is becoming a real subject of concern for me. I've seen people on flickr congratulate each other for the beauty of their recasted dolls and openly talking about the ones they were about to buy : I received messages of threats and insults when I pointed out that this was both illegal and immoral. I wondered if I had somehow stepped through the looking glass and now up was down and right was wrong !
A few days ago, a fellow french doll artist, Lilycat (check her work, she's great), discovered thanks to one of her clients a whole facebook group dedicated to recasting her creations. She's taking care of it like the professional she is, through legal actions. But that doesn't make it okay. This is a SERIOUS issue.
Creating dolls is difficult and time consuming. For my own first prototype, I spent more than 300 hours sculpting, sanding, piercing... Which means that when I sell one doll, I get about 1.10€ per hour. And that doesn't even take into account the money I have to spend for making the molds, the resin's price, my tools. I was lucky enough to find a job that leaves me enough time to work on my dolls with a pay high enough for me to pay for both my rent and food ! Not everyone has this chance.
When you buy a recast, you steal from the artist or the company who created the original one. You're not "advertising" their dolls, you're not "showing them respect". You get their work, they get no money for it.
Do you REALLY think this is fair ?
You might be thinking "Oh but I'm only one person, I don't think buying ONE recast will really hurt the artists and companies !" You're wrong. If you buy a recast, do you think the guy who made the fake doll will tells himself "Okay, I made one person happy and I made some money ! Time to stop and get an actual honest job !" ? No, he will go "Hey, people are buying stuff I didn't had to put any effort into ! I can make TONS of money this way !" and he will make more copies.
The people you're stealing from may have families. They may have a rent to pay, or a car, even pets they need to feed. If they spend so much time on making beautiful dolls only to see their work stolen away by a thief, they won't be able to keep on making them. They will have to give up and find another job.
You're not only one person. When you knowingly buy a recasted doll, you become one of THEM. And when companies and artists will stop making bjds, you'll be responsible.
tl;dr : Don't have the money ? Don't buy the doll.

Complicated News
My life is currently a huge mess. Three members of my family are gravely sick and I'm doing my best to be there for them but that means little to no time for creation as when I'm not in the hospital or working at my day job, I'm just too exhausted to create anything worth a damn.
I also managed to antagonize most of my friends and the ones left are too busy dealing with their own issues to shoulder mine on top of that so it's not like I have much of a support network anymore.
I'm turning 26 in three days.
I'm not sure I can do this for 60 more years.
So yeah.
Some news...
I think I’m going to stop offering custom dolls. I mean, I’m having a lot of fun working with my current client (she wants a parchment themed Darjeeling and LOVE thinking up ideas to make her look great) but it simply makes me realize that I’m not having fun doing cutesy standard stuff.
1) I’m only having fun when I’m allowed to do whatever I want and do something unique.
2) Apparently my full customs sell better than my regular full sets (make up + eyes + clothes).
So… I’ll just finish the other two commissions I already agreed I’d do and then I’ll only make heavy custom dolls, like the
Cost of Producing a Doll
I read a lot of people justifying the fact that they bought recasted dolls by complaining about how expensive BJDs are. So I decided I'd try to estimate the cost of making those dolls.
For the sake of the argument, I purposely used the average or lower estimates of the expenses those companies face, but I apologize in advance in case my numbers are off. I don't speak korean, so I had to roam through english and french websites to find my informations (also math isn't my strong point). I still think this gives a rough idea.
So I took the example of Fairyland, which is one of the most recasted companies. They're based in Seoul, South Korea.

SO ! Good news, bad news. I'll be at the Ldoll festival this week-end with my friend !Tendres-Chimeres (https://www.deviantart.com/tendres-chimeres) This is the good news. My mold were a bust, they just won't dry and I can't use them so I won't have anything to sell. This is the not quite so good news.
In the other hand, I decided I would open the preorders for both Sencha and Darjeeling.
You can now order them for 275 (355$) instead of my artist cast who cost 350 (453$) ! If you preorder them at the Ldoll, there's a special discount and you'll pay only 250 (324$) !
I accept paypal and layaways, I'll will ship worldwide (shipping and shipping insurance price wil

Many dolls are limited edition and one of a kind. If I want a doll and the company aren't selling it then its their fault the recast of it is in demand. Resin isn't a very expensive material and I'm not justifying spending $700+ on a mass produced doll. If its an art doll it's different but the mass produced dolls are just unjustly over priced. I'm getting a recast as my first doll - and owning one isnt illegal. Infact most recasts aren't illegal
